Greeting Families and Community Members,
The John Swett Unified School District is busy gearing up for the 2018-19 school year. Our staff has been busy conducting a deep cleaning of all our school sites, completing repairs, and also getting ready for some of our school bond construction projects to begin. The quality and cleanliness of our school buildings is important to ensure that all of our students have a healthy school environment for learning. We are very close to completing all open work orders and eliminating our back-log of repairs. In addition, we have cleared out the entire second floor of the classroom wing at John Swett High School in anticipation of of our classroom modernization school bond project. We are also being flexible with classroom usage between the high school and middle school, accelerating the timeline for our modernization project at the high school. All John Swett High School English classes will be convened on the bottom floor of Carquinez Middle School, and most of the CMS students will be housed on the second floor of the school. In addition to the modernization project at the high school, we are moving forward with the school replacement project for Carquinez Middle School. We have a finalized site design schematic and are now going through the various review steps. More information is available at our website (www.jsusd.org).
In addition to getting our school sites physically ready for school to begin, we are also beginning our planning meetings for the return of students. Many of our teachers and staff have been meeting over the summer to continue our work related to culture and climate at each of our school sites. These teams of teachers, staff, and administrators have been deepening their planning related to school-wide rules and expectations, procedures for students, and improving instructional and management practices within classrooms. I am continuously impressed with the way our teachers and staff work collaboratively together to improve conditions for teaching and learning within our schools. Along with our continued work related to climate and culture, I will be leading the District to expand ways we engage our families in the learning process. Specifically, I will be teaching our staff about different ways to reach out to all parents and guardians, invite and involve parents in the process of educating students, and to learn more about our students and their interests. Our goal is to ensure that all families feel supported and included in the learning process and that our students feel connected to their teachers and staff at our schools.We have also had some staffing changes in our District. Deanna Yasaki is the new principal of Rodeo Hills Elementary School. Deanna is an experienced school principal with a deep commitment to ensuring that all of our students are successful. She will be setting up some "meet and greet" sessions at the start of the school year, so please be on the lookout for those dates. Also, we have hired a new Business Manager in our District Office, Susan Mathern. Susan comes to us from Manteca Unified and will be helping to ensure that we maintain our positive budget certification going forward. Finally, Margaret Sasaki, the Superintendent's Secretary, retired after many years of faithful service to our District. She will be missed! Fortunately for us, Margaret is being replaced by Rhonda Luchini, the former Attendance Clerk from Rodeo Hills. Rhonda is amazing! She can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.Finally, please be aware of some important dates and changes. The first day of school will be on Wednesday, August 22nd. The hours of school operation at Rodeo Hills have changed with the new start time being 8:40 am and dismissal at 2:55 and 3:00 pm. In addition, this will result in some changes to our bus schedule. We will be having a meal and transportation fair on Monday, August 6th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at John Swett High School. This is a great way to get everything completed before school starts.
